What To Do After an Accident

Oct 10, 2023

Driving around San Diego this past year, I feel like I’ve seen more car accidents than ever before. I was curious, so pulled up the most recent data available, from just before the COVID-19 pandemic:

Year Accidents Fatal Injury Prop. Damage
2020 5,250,837 35,766 1,593,390 3,621,681

As someone who was gravely impacted by an auto accident when I was 16, I want to share with you the must do’s after you get into an accident.

  1. Check for Injuries: First, make sure that you and any passengers in your vehicle are okay. If there are injuries, call 911 immediately for medical assistance.
  2. Move to a Safe Location: If it’s safe to do so, move your vehicle to the side of the road or a safe area to avoid further accidents or traffic disruptions. Turn on your hazard lights.
  3. Exchange Information: Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver(s) involved in the accident. Get their name, phone number, address, driver’s license number, and insurance information.
  4. Document the Scene: Take photos of the accident scene, including vehicle damage, license plates, and any relevant road signs or signals. This documentation can be helpful for insurance claims.
  5. Contact the Police: In many cases, it’s advisable to call the police to report the accident, especially if there are injuries, significant property damage, or a dispute about the events leading to the accident. The police will create an accident report, which can be valuable for insurance purposes.
  6. Notify Your Insurance Company: Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to report the accident. They will guide you through the claims process and may provide instructions on what to do next.
  7. Seek Medical Attention: Even if you don’t feel injured immediately after the accident, it’s a good idea to seek medical attention. Some injuries may not become apparent until later, and documentation of your condition is crucial for insurance claims.
  8. Contact an Attorney: Depending on the circumstances of the accident and the extent of injuries or damages, you may want to consult with an attorney who specializes in personal injury or auto accidents. They can provide legal advice and represent your interests if needed.
  9. Notify Family and Friends: Inform your family or a trusted friend about the accident so they are aware of the situation and can provide support if necessary.
  10. Follow Up: Follow any recommendations or treatment plans provided by medical professionals. Keep records of medical bills, treatments, and any related expenses for insurance claims or potential legal action.

Remember to stay calm and cooperate with law enforcement, emergency responders, and other parties involved in the accident. It’s essential to prioritize safety and ensure that everyone involved receives the necessary medical attention and support.

From someone who lived with post concussion syndrome after my car accident, I highly recommend being assessed by someone like myself to make sure the upper spine is healthy following the accident. I’m always available to speak with you or a loved one to help answer questions and be a resource in your healing journey.

P.S. Symptoms don’t always appear right away. Many people don’t start feeling the full effect of the accident for weeks. Don’t wait, get checked right away.
